He played in Croatia for Mehanika Metkovi\u0107, Badel 1862 Zagreb and Agram Medve\u0161\u010dak, in Bosnia and Herzegovina for Borac Banja Luka, in Spain for FC Barcelona, BM Granollers, and in France for Saint-Marcel Vernon. \u0106avar has stated that Veselin Vujovi\u0107 was a big influence on him opting to playing handball. He played for the Croatian national team at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, where Croatia won the gold medal. \u0106avar was the top goalscorer of the Croatian national team from 1996 to 2007, when Mirza D\u017eomba broke his record.
